You don't rest well.

Writer's picture: Pete and Julie MorrillPete and Julie Morrill

It's a dreary, rainy December Saturday morning at our home in Montague. As I sit in my comfy armchair, I'm comforted by the rhythmic thump of clothes in the dryer, the steady ticking of a clock, rain pattering on stones outside a window, and excited Labrador retrievers barking in anticipation of breakfast.

Pete and I are people of faith but our True North Quests organization is for people of all faiths, so we try to limit any hint of preachiness to Christian audiences, and that includes my blog posts.

But this morning I experienced something profound in its utter truth and simplicity. When I'm quiet, calm, and peaceful enough (which is not often enough, and a lot less lately), I sometimes hear the voice of the Holy Spirit speaking to my spirit---a soft whisper that's so gentle yet authoritative, there's no mistaking it for any other voice.

I heard these words: “You don’t rest well. A day of rest is for you to stop listening to your voice and listen to My voice.”

Drop the mic.

I will ponder these words today as I take a break today to refresh, stop the chattering of endless thoughts in my head, and listen. Rest and listen.

Some of you don't rest well either. No judgment. I just thought I'd share this message with you too.

May God bless your day of rest.
