When a Detour is the Way Forward

Writer's picture: Pete and Julie MorrillPete and Julie Morrill

Usually, when Pete and I coach people, it's exciting and exhilarating to see people's "aha" moments where we've asked just the right question and they discover exactly who they were born to be and know what they were born to do. They've discovered their calling, and we can walk with them on the first steps into this brave new season of their life journey.

Unfortunately, such bliss is not always what we encounter. We often see potential in a person, they have the "aha" moments, but there's no way for them to get from point A to point B, due to a mountainous load of steaming, reeking manure barring their way forward.

Pete and I experienced are in the midst of coaching someone in just such a situation. Revelations, opportunities, loads of talent, profound giftings, but a seemingly insurmountable obstacle preventing that person from realizing her full potential. In this case, in order to move this person from point A to point B, we've coached her to take a life-jarring detour to a place of peace and rest, healing and recovery.

In this woman's case, it may seem like she's taking a huge step backward, but we know it's a place for her to step aside, breathe, and let her mind, body, and emotions catch up, line up, coalesce, and settle into who she is so she can eventually step into her calling.

So if you're pushing to move forward toward your calling and you can't make it happen, consider a detour. It may be unwelcome in the moment, but detours, like a rest stop along the highway, may be exactly what you need to eventually move forward with greater ease, clarity, and momentum.

Welcome the detours and rest stops. You can't always fulfill your calling without them.
